Owning chickens is awesome, isn’t it?
That is, until you realize they eat like tiny feathered dinosaurs!
Whether you have a small backyard flock or you’re slowly turning into the neighborhood “chicken person,” knowing how much feed your birds need can save you money, prevent waste, and help keep your flock healthy.

Note: This calculator gives a general estimate. Actual feed needs can change based on breed, age, season, free-ranging, treats, weather, and egg production.
How Much Feed Does a Chicken Eat Per Day?
As a simple rule, an adult laying hen usually eats around 1/4 pound of feed per day. That means a flock of 6 hens may eat around 1.5 pounds of feed per day, or roughly 45 pounds per month.
Full transparency, that number is not perfect for every flock… but it gives you a strong starting point.
Chickens may eat more or less depending on:
- Breed size
- Age
- Weather
- Egg production
- Free-ranging
- Treats and scraps
- Feed quality
Why This Calculator Helps
Chicken feed can disappear fast. One day you think you have plenty left, and the next day your flock is staring at you like you personally betrayed them.
This calculator helps you estimate your feed needs before you run out, so you can plan ahead, buy the right amount, and avoid wasting money. (who doesn’t want to do that?)
Quick Example
If you have 8 adult laying hens:
8 hens x 0.25 pounds per day = 2 pounds of feed per day
That means your flock may eat about:
- 14 pounds per week
- 60 pounds per month
- About 1.5 bags per month if you buy 40 lb bags
Final Thoughts
A chicken feed calculator will not replace common sense, but it gives you a solid baseline. Watch your flock, check your feeders, and adjust based on what you actually see.
Healthy chickens are happy chickens — and happy chickens are usually the ones charging across the yard like a tiny T-rex they hear the feed scoop!
